The "F" Bomb

The jig is up. My daughter was caught saying the word “fuck” under her breath today and her father demanded to know where she had heard that word. I gulped silently and waited for the other shoe to drop. She said that she had heard Mommy use that word while driving in the car. And I had to admit it was true. I did the typical parent song-and-dance of “even though I say it, it’s not ok, and Mommy always corrects herself after she says it” — yada yada yada. The poor kid just got her first taste of do as I say, not as I do.

As I told my husband later, after the “F” bomb was detonated, that he knew what he was getting into when he married me. I’ve never had lady-like language. I was raised by two parents who delighted in using every curse word known to the English language. As a teenager, when I said “oh shit” someplace in the house, the response was not swift punishment but “Whatsa matter? What the fuck happened?”

It’s not pretty to hear a seven year-old say “fuck,” but at least I’m keeping them honest.
